Onion-Free Seasonings & Substitutes When You Can’t Eat Onions

Allergic to onions? Can’t eat anything in the allium genus or families of amaryliidaceae / amaryllis / daffodil / alliodeae families or subfamilies? Not to worry – we have a wide variety of onion-free blends and spices for you on this page!

This list doesn’t include all our single organic spices, so be sure to check those out too.

Looking for a good substitute for onion, onion powder, onion granules or minced onion? Here’s some options. A note – they won’t be a perfect 1:1 match and you’ll have to experiment with portions for the taste you’re going for, but you can hit some of the flavor profiles you’re looking for with these onion alternatives:

  • Asafoetida, also known as “hing” – a tiny bit goes a LONG way. Start with a very small amount and taste test as you build the dish. It’s a really good sub for onions (and garlic) but if use too much you will regret it.
  • Garlic granules (or powder or minced)
  • Garlic paste
  • Garlic salt
  • Leeks
  • Radishes
  • Sautéed green cabbage
  • Celery, or a celery and carrot combo
  • Bulb of a fennel
  • Shallots
  • Chives
  • Green onions/scallions

If you’re allergic / sensitive to onion, you may also be sensitive to garlic too. In that case, check out our organic seasonings without onion or garlic.
