Our certified organic ground bird’s eye chili is fresh, flavorful and spicy. It sits at about 150,000 Scoville units, which is pretty darn hot considering a jalapeño is rated around 2,500-5,000 units.

Bird’s Eye peppers have a delayed heat that builds to a delightful intensity (delightful if you’re into spicy food, that is). Its sometimes referred to as African Bird Chili or Piri Piri Pepper (see our Piri Piri mix here). We use small amounts of this to make our Spicy Lime Salt and Jamaican Jerk seasoning. We also sell them whole.

I use the ground Bird’s Eye powder mixed with equal parts of Habanero powder and then a little smoked Serrano or Cayenne as a Hot seasoning for my evening meals. I’ve had a lot of trouble over the years in finding a reliable source for the Bird’s Eye powder, but now have found a great quality powder at a very reasonable price through Pinch Spice. I highly recommend this product.

Great pepper heat that doesn’t linger on the palate. It’s not quite as hot as habanero but equally as delicious!

An Important Note That We Should Probably Call “A Legal Disclaimer”: Ground Bird’s Eye chili shouldn’t be confused with “chili powder“, which is a mixture of spices used to make American-style chili. It’s easy to get them confused because a lot of people refer to this as “Bird’s Eye Chili Powder“. In fact, we used to call it that until we accidentally “heat poisoned” beloved family members.

As the story goes, one night at the cottage Aunt Joan and Uncle Rich were making chili and poured a heaping spoonful into the pot thinking they were using regular “chili powder”. Being in their remote cabin in the woods, they didn’t have other ingredients around like sour cream, milk, yogurt or other “heat tamers” to try to reverse the added heat. Luckily they did have some pasta and cinnamon to try to even it out, but we hear the real trick to “putting the fire out” was the wine, which was probably poured a little heavier than planned that night. We’re pretty sure Uncle Rich actually liked this new lightning-bolt version of chili and they both had a good time with the wine, but still, we think a disclaimer is needed because that kind of chili heat is not everyone’s cup of tea.
