Nigella seeds are often seen toasted in Indian cuisine. They’re also referred to as kalonji in Hindi, black seeds, black onion seeds, fennel flower and black caraway. Often used on top of breads, Nigella doesn’t have a strong odor but it tastes strong of herbs (kind of like how oregano tastes so fresh) with a slight bitterness. It has flavor similar to thyme. They’re a good replacements for sesame seeds, just without their sweetness.
